UP to 200 new jobs will be created in East Anglia thanks to a DTI award of a £70m project to Shell UK Exploration and Production. The contract win could provide 100 new jobs for Lowestoft alone. It involves fabricating and installing a Trident platform in the Skiff gas field in the southern North Sea - 72 kilometres off the Norfolk coast. The Trident platform concept was developed and designed by the Shell Expro project team at Lowestoft. Trident is novel in that it has the minimum of facilities, resulting in a structure weighing about 400 tonnes, which can be installed by drilling rig. This is a first, not just for Shell Expro, but for the UK offshore industry. At a cost of only £5m, it is expected to facilitate the development of more small fields. The design has been fast-tracked and required intensive development work to bring it to maturity. The platform fabrication contract was awarded to Lowestoft company, Keith Yeoman Engin-eering last October, providing 60 jobs at peak. Installation will now be carried out by the Maersk Endurer in April. Malcolm Brinded, Shell Expro’s managing director, said: It is important to the industry, Shell and ExxonMobil, that we are able to cost-effectively develop small gas prospects such as this in the southern North Sea.
