A MARINE engineering firm in Suffolk handled the £250,000 refit of a replica Mississippi paddle steamer, which was transported from Sweden to the port of Lowestoft.
Dixie Queen was brought in for refitting by Lowestoft-based Small & Co.
Originally a ferry, Dixie Queen was converted into a themed restaurant in Sweden during the 1980s.
Now owned by Thames Luxury Charters, she will be taking up residence on the River Thames as a luxury restaurant and corporate function vessel.
The whole contract took Small & Co 18 months to finalise and secure prior to the vessel’s arrival in Lowestoft. The Dixie Queen presented a totally different challenge for us, said MD Paul Kirby.
Small & Co operates the 76 metre Lowestoft dry dock at the Associated British Ports gateway.
Alastair MacFarlane, the Port manager, said it was a coup for Lowestoft to have won the ship repair and conversion business in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
