Cut flowers supplier Lingarden of Spalding is preparing for a further wave of expansion with a £750,000 redevelopment of its goods intake area. The improvements will give the company the capacity to open a fourth flower preparation factory and create an additional 25 jobs. The improvements, due for completion in time for the Christmas peak in orders, include a 50% increase in cold storage capacity and a new self-levelling dock which will cut the time needed to unload delivery lorries from 40 minutes to 10. In May, the company acquired garden plants supplier SB Englands of Wisbech and Blackwell Brothers International Plants of Swindon was brought into the group in June. A month later, Lingarden opened a new £1m cut flower factory to supply the Somerfield and Kwik Save chains. Martin Brown, MD of the Lingarden Flowers division, said the multiple retail sector had mainly been responsible for a 300% growth in cut flower sales in the last 20 years. |
