Anglian Water, the Huntingdon utilities group, and partners Mitsubishi have won the $200m contract to supply the Chinese capital of Beijing with water.

Chief executive Chris Mellor believes that the deal - the largest water contract in the world this year - marks the ability of the company to compete on the global stage with the biggest European players.

The fact AW was a front runner for the contract was reported here two weeks ago.

Mellor said: “Traditionally we have found it difficult to compete against the big German and French companies. But it’s not impossible as we’ve demonstrated, beating off two French companies to win the Beijing contract.”

Anglian is also bidding for the contract to manage the London Underground network as it diversifies into broader utilities management.
