United Distribution - which is owned by French company the Geodis Group – is closing its UK operations with the loss of 215 jobs across the region. Twenty-two full-time jobs are to be lost at the company’s Norwich depot, together with 60 at Braintree and 111 at Wellingborough – with the closure of both its head office and depot. A number of part-time positions will also go. The Geodis Group said that despite continual investment since its purchase of United almost three years ago, a significant downturn in volumes, coupled with increasingly challenging industry parameters, had seen the business become unviable. “We very much regret the site closures and subsequent job losses proposed in today’s announcement and will be playing an active role in supporting our employees through this difficult period,” said Jean-Marie Dutoya, managing director, Geodis UK. The closure takes effect from 31st January. |
