Power cables installed by Global Marine Systems, the Chelmsford company, at Horns Rev – the world’s largest offshore wind farm built to date – are helping to provide energy for thousands of Danish homes. A major milestone was recently reached when the first 80 turbines was commissioned and the power generated transferred to the Danish national grid. Sited 20km into the North Sea, Horns Rev is the first phase of a large-scale Danish project aimed at producing non-polluting electricity from offshore wind turbines. When it becomes fully operational later this year, the site will be capable of producing enough power for up to 150,000 homes. As part of the complex project, completed in harsh environmental conditions, Global Marine had to bury power cables between 1m and 2m beneath the sea bed. |
