Just a month after the Government predicted a jobs boom on the back of gas field expansion off the East Anglia coast, oil giant Shell has announced that it is slashing 200 jobs in Lowestoft. Just a month after the Government predicted a jobs boom on the back of gas field expansion off the East Anglia coast, oil giant Shell has announced that it is slashing 200 jobs in Lowestoft. A further 100 positions are going elsewhere in the UK, says the company.

Shell’s decision to create a new regional centre in Europe means the closure of its Lowestoft operation after 37 years in the Suffolk town: it is one of the town’s largest employers.

The company will continue to run 27 platforms off the East Anglia coast, employing 300, and maintain the gas terminal at Bacton in Norfolk.
