Canadian print giant, Quebecor World Inc, has announced it will slash jobs from its Corby facility once it has finished the obligatory discussions with union representatives. Union bosses believe that over 300 jobs could go from a staff of almost 800. Losses had been expected ever since Associated Newspapers announced that Quebecor had lost the contract for its weekend supplements to Sheffield-based Polestar. Quebecor, which currently turns over £84m at its Corby centre, said that it “remains committed to the UK market and will continue to provide its customers with the highest level of service.” It added that certain equipment would be mothballed while replacement contracts were sought. The contract won by Polestar from Associated Newspapers included the weekly print of ‘Night & Day’, ‘You Magazine’ and ‘Weekend’, a total weekly print run of approximately 8.7 million units. Quebecor World is one of the largest commercial printers in the world with approximately 37,000 emp-loyees working in more than 160 printing and related facilities worldwide. |
