Cambridgeshire based ITM Power has made a breakthrough in its quest to make fuel cell technologies commercially viable. The AIM-listed company has demonstrated an alkaline solid polymer fuel cell using its alkaline membrane technology. It “significantly broadens the potential addressable markets for future licensing deals,” says the company. Crucially for the widespread adoption of the technology, the device was a micro-fuel cell, suitable for use in a mobile phone or other portable electronic devices. It has the potential to be operated at high energy density at room temperature using very safe materials. ITM has also developed and filed a UK patent on a new early warning system, which indicates when the new-look fuel cell is in need of topping up.
