Autonomy Corporation, the web infrastructure software specialist, has agreed to form a joint venture with China Netcom Broadband Corporation Limited to bring next generation technology to the rapidly expanding consumer internet market. CNCBB is the largest provider of broadband and fixed line connectivity in northern China with over 110 million customers or 95 per cent of the market in an area which includes China’s capital, Beijing. It is part of the China Netcom Group, one of China’s largest telecoms providers, and has secured significant investment. The new service will bring together Autonomy’s enterprise retrieval expertise and newly developed consumer technologies and CNCBB’s market reach. Mike Lynch, Autonomy’s CEO, said: “With the rapid growth of the Chinese internet market, with broadband available in over 30 million homes, over 300 million mobile handsets and the volume of available multimedia content increasing at a phenomenal rate, it is clear that the technology leaders with full multimedia search capabilities and local support will be the leaders of the future. “Autonomy is unique amongst Western enterprise retrieval vendors in having successfully established operations in China as well as other Asian territories over a number of years. “Joining with CNCBB enables us to build on this success and take our core technology forward into new high growth markets. “This will allow the consumer to access next generation technology features such as implicit query, TV search and Smart folders with a technology capable of more accurately understanding the complexities of the Chinese language than the currently used legacy methods.”
