IFS Group, a Norfolk company supplying polyurethane chemicals to global industries, has won a major contract that is helping to ensure the safety of a 580 kilometre gas pipeline in Africa. The contract, amount unspecified, is for a foam system to be used to joint the pipeline, which will run from Lagos in Nigeria to Takordi in Ghana, then along the coastlines of togo and Benin. The overall concept is to carry the gas from Nigeria with feeder spur lines to these three, energy-starved nations. The pipes will run along the sea bed. Because the foaming operation takes place at sea, IFS has developed a foam with specific properties for use in a marine environment. It will be used on more than 48,500 joints in a project that will take two years to complete. Apart from specialised chemicals, the operation requires specialist ships to undertake the pipe-laying process and two new vessels β the Brazos Horizon and the Sea Horizon β have been built for the operation. IFS Group MD, Dr Barrie Colvin said that it took almost 15 years to finalise the legal framework of the contract, which involved several governments. βIn the end the company won the contract based on both the excellent performance of the chemical and a proven ability to support the project using highly skilled technical personnel.β The last two months has seen shipments of large volumes of chemicals leave the IFS factory in Norfolk destined for this vitally important west African energy project.
