Milton Keynes is to launch a TV station in the autumn of 2006 following the award of a broadcast license for Milton Keynes and surrounding areas to Jawad A Siddiqui by the Office of Telecommunications. Siddiqui, chief executive of Milton Keynes Television Company (MKTV), established the firm in June to transmit the new digital television channel locally, nationally and internationally. Siddiqui said: “Local, as opposed to regional television is the way of the future, and in line with our tradition as a forward thinking city, we are bringing that future forward. The station will reflect the core values of Milton Keynes.” Established in June 2005, MKTV has an ambitious five-year plan to redefine the entire concept of community television. Projected future developments include a production company to sell originated programmes to existing mainstream channels and a television school to bring work and education to the area and create a skills base to take MK forward.
