Marshall buys Mildenhall site for Army manufacturing

Cambridge based Marshall Specialist Vehicles (SV) has acquired the former Galaxy site in Mildenhall where it will manufacture support vehicles for the British Armed Forces. The work will create around 50 local jobs. Marshall SV is under contract to support MAN (UK) Limited in the production of over 6,500 support vehicles.

The demanding manufacturing requirements of this contract would require extensive changes to be made to the existing Marshall SV manufacturing facilities in the North Works at the Cambridge site which would be both time consuming and costly.

Also, it would be difficult to achieve the necessary rebuilding work within the demanding timescales of this very important contract. Therefore, the company has elected to complete this work at Mildenhall in the Galaxy site.

Peter Callaghan, CEO of Marshall SV said: “Marshall SV has an unrivalled reputation in world market places and the acquisition of this manufacturing site will enable us to provide vehicles of the highest

quality to fulfil the British Armed Forces very demanding requirements.”

The move of part of Marshall SV’s manufacturing facilities to Mildenhall has the strong support of Trades Union, Marshall employees, Marshall management and the Local Authorities.

Other Marshall SV work will continue as at present from the North Works in the Newmarket Road at Cambridge.

Marshall SC stressed that the decision to acquire the premises at Mildenhall was made on the basis of strong business and commercial requirements.

Speculation continues that at some stage of the future, more of the Marshall Cambridge business will move to Mildenhall – possibly the Aerospace subsidiary as pressure grows for Cambridge housing land and, particularly, land that Marshall owns at its Newmarket Road site.
