The £335m Balgzand-Bacton Line (BBL), the first pipeline to link the Netherlands and the UK, has begun supplying natural gas to the Norfolk terminal. With a capacity of 1.75 million cubic metres per hour, the new †500m submarine pipeline is able to transport approximately 15 billion cubic metres of gas per year.

The gas, which comes from the Netherlands and beyond will be able to compensate for the rise in demand for natural gas and the steep decline in domestic production and could account for 15 per cent of the UK's annual requirement.

Overall length of the 36 inch wide pipeline is 235 km of which 230 km is offshore, and the construction took two years.

BBL Company is a joint venture between E.ON Ruhrgas, Fluxys and N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie.
