A new wave of overseas investments into the region have been lined up by East of England International (EEI). Major electronics and Pharma players in Japan are said to be in advanced talks over establishing European headquarters in the region and the land of the enterprising son will be a major target of EEI activity this year.

Business Weekly can also reveal that large Indian companies are preparing to open dialogue with VCs such as Amadeus Capital Partners in Cambridge as a route to AIM floats in London.

And in an exciting breakthrough, the East of England's universities have been given the inside track on a new market about to open up in India.

Britain's High Commissioner in Delhi, Sir Michael Arthur, has revealed that India's tertiary education market - currently closed to outsiders - will be liberalised in the next two years, handing Cambridge, Herts and Essex Unis, especially, a golden chance to sell services such as degree courses, distance learning and other JVs.

Dr Shai Vyakarnam, director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning at Cambridge said: "As a rapidly developing economy, India is also becoming a new source of innovation, so it is a fantastic opportunity for us to provide educational services to inspire India's future business leaders.

"CfEL was instrumental in negotiating a three-year student exchange programme between the Judge Business School and the India Business School in Hyderabad and I look forward to being involved in many more such activities.

"As major foreign investors look to inject fresh capital into infrastructure projects in the region, Spanish-owned BAA Stansted is set to announce that it can deliver a second runway and ancillary facilities at close to £2bn - half the original government estimates for the project - and with less land-take.
