Transatlantic all-business-class pioneers, MAXjet have received some direct competition in the form of new Luton-based airline, Silverjet, which bills itself not only as the first 'British exclusively business class airline,' but also the first truly carbon neutral airline.
Silverjet offers exclusively business class travel, a 30 minute check-in time, and 100 flat beds, with tickets costing from £999 return. The market for transatlantic all business class appears to be booming; the firm reported that 'seat sales are comfortably ahead of management's expectations.' Bookings for its rival,MAXjet which also flies to New York, but also Las Vegas and Washigton DC, are also doing well. At the time of going to press, flights to Dulles airport in DC with MAXjet were sold out until well into May. MAXjet began offering a transatlantic all-business-class service early last year , but are an American firm. Aside from setting itself apart from the competition by being exclusively business class, Silverjet also claims another first in the airline industry. "As the first truly carbon neutral airline, we are enabling customers to neutralize the environmental impact and actively engage in the process of offsetting emissions from each flight," said Lawrence Hunt, Silverjet chief executive. Included within the price of a ticket on board the airline is a 'mandatory carbon offset contribution,' which Silverjet makes on your behalf, to balance the amount of carbon produced by the aeroplane's flight across the Atlantic. The firm are working together with The CarbonNeutral Company, which invests in climate friendly projects around the world. According to The CarbonNeutral Company's website, the CO2 associated with your flight, 0.6 tonnes, flying the 5533 Km from Luton to JFK, is ‘balanced out’ by forestry and climate friendly energy projects which offset equivalent amounts of CO2 being released into the atmosphere. |
