Gardline Australia, a subsidiary of Great Yarmouth’s Gardline Shipping, is to help the Australian government in its battle against illegal foreign fishing vessels by supplying it with an ex-demo warship built for the Royal Navy.

Gardline signed a one-year contract with the Australian Customs Service for the provision of the vessel RV Triton to undertake patrol duties off Northern Australia after the Australian Government decided to strengthen efforts to stamp down on illegal fishing.

Built in the UK in 2000, the diesel-electric powered RV Triton was constructed at two-thirds the size of a full-scale warship and designed as a demonstrator for the Royal Navy’s future surface combatant frigate requirement.

Triton is currently undergoing modifications for its new task and will shortly be sailing for Australia to commence work for the Australian Customs Service in January 2007.

Gardline Shipping is involved in a range of activities from marine sciences, security, ship building, dry dock engineering, geographical information systems and digital mapping, to satellite communications and marine satellite TV. It employs over 800 personnel worldwide and has a turnover in excess of £65m.
