Two years after celebrating its centenary, one of the region’s great family firms is to close its Wellingborough factory with the loss of 130 jobs and shift production to Berwick from June.

Saxby’s frozen pastry plant is being closed by new owner General Mills, following an extensive review in the two months since it acquired the business.

The group also owns the Jus-Rol facility at Berwick and that has been given the nod over Wellingborough.

The writing was on the wall when Saxby’s made around 200 workers redundant in 2005 as it cut the production of baked goods in Wellingborough because of poor sales.

It was hoped the acquisition by General Mills would prove to be a potential lifeline.
