After being the first organisation selected for the Financial Times' seasonal appeal, Cambridge-based CAMFED has raised more than £620k to support girls' education in rural Africa.
The funds were generated by a series of articles highlighting the charity's work and stories of some of the girls whose lives have benefitted from it, published weekly in the FT during December and January. FT editor, Lionel Barber said: “The Financial Times was proud to support CAMFED as the beneficiary of our Seasonal Appeal, and the response from our readers was extremely generous.” The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) has helped over 300,000 children in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana and Tanzania to go to school since its founding in 1993. It said that the money raised would support more than 2,000 girls in Africa during their secondary education. “Girls' education is recognized as the most effective weapon in the global fight against HIV/AIDS and securing education for girls in Africa promises unparalleled economic and social benefits,” said Ann Cotton, Executive Director of CAMFED International. |
