Bedfordshire-based construction firm, Kier said that continued demand for housing and public sector spending in construction and support services have prompted a 28 per cent rise in the firm's pre-tax profits.

Profits for the six months to December 2006 were up to £36.2m from £28.4m for the same period last year, along with a 26 per cent boost in EPS and a 17 per cent jump in dividend, up to 9.6p from 8.2p last time.

Chief executive, John Dodds called the group's prospects “excellent,” citing ample opportunity in the markets in which it operates, full order books and a strong balance sheet.

Announcement of results saw the firm's share price gain 2.5 per cent, growing 57p to 2315p.
