Items as diverse as watches, training shoes, TV remotes and medical sensors could all soon be brought into the Bluetooth family, effortlessly connecting to mobile phones and PCs as early as next year.
Cambridge-based Bluetooth pioneer, CSR, is to sample the industry’s first ULP (Ultra Low Power) Bluetooth silicon with a number of lead customers this year with silicon expected to be available in 2008. Previously known as Wibree, ULP Bluetooth is a new complementary Bluetooth technology that can be used to transfer simple data sets between compact devices and can run for up to 10 years on one button cell battery. One of the development centres for the new technology could well be Bangalore, India, which according to Business Standard online has now emerged as the largest R & D centre for CSR outside the UK. Acquired through the purchase of UbiNetics in 2005, Bangalore employs 130, representing 20 per cent of the company’s global R & D workforce. Cambridge employs around 600. |
