Humanoid robots, robotic arms, a motion capture suit and wheeled robotic platforms are just some of the latest pieces of equipment available to students on the new BSc (Hons) in Robotics following a £250,000 summer investment by the University of Bedfordshire’s Department of Computing and Information Systems.
The new robots will be used to help students develop collision detection programmes similar to that used in space travel robots including Rover and Pathfinder. The techniques taught are used for space exploration, decommissioning nuclear plants, manufacturing, and for performing surgery. Professor Carsten Maple, head of Computing and Information Systems, said: “These are growth areas but few courses combine both robotics and artificial intelligence. The BSc provides sound theoretical and conceptual grounding in intelligent systems and is an ideal base for a career in research or industry.” The course, available from September, can be studied as a joint degree with Artificial Intelligence or Computer Science. • The growth of the gaming industry and the increase in animated films has led to the introduction of a new hi-tech degree course at the University of Bedfordshire. The BSc (Hons) Computer Animation will allow graduates to work in both the film and television industries, computer games development and various roles in computer programming, CD ROMs and websites. The course will also benefit from £50,000 of new hi-tech equipment including motion capture suits and a new computer graphics lab worth £60,000 plus. |
