Internet pioneer, Peter Dawe pulls no punches as he discusses his latest venture - DaweVision.

The company

dawe03.jpgDaweVision was founded in 2005 to integrate TV, internet, computing and telephone in ways that have been much hyped but not delivered. Founders Peter Dawe and Mark Turner were pioneers of the Internet at PIPEX and Demon – Europe’s first two Internet service providers.

Their experience of building user-friendly services is essential for the company's first product, Babel TV.

Babel TV boxes will be available online from November 6th priced £295 from www.babel.tv . One gigabyte of secure online storage costs £1 per month — enough space for about 250 music tracks or 2000 photos. Extra secure online storage is priced at an additional £1 per month per gigabyte.

01.You seem to have made a tremendous amount of commercial progress in a very short period of time and with fairly minimal investment. How have you managed it?

Our philosophy is to take our skills and use them to leverage Open Source software and industry standard hardware. In many ways we are standing on the shoulders of a pyramid of other developers. Another secret is to take a few gifted developers, divide the task so they can work almost independently and trust them to do their job. And don't change the specification significantly mid-stream. Finally, we haven't had to spend time trying to work with partners in advance of completing our development.
.

02.Does DaweVision have the marketing clout to break into a market dominated by some big, established players? What are your plans in this area?

Small players have to use some sophisticated 'tricks' to get to the market. For instance not tackling someone like Microsoft head-on, but to target areas where players are weaker. So Babel.TV goes at the PVR TV market, not the PC market.
.

03.How is Babel TV different to the other offerings on the market?

BabelTV is the first product that does pretty much everything a consumer wants from electronics, but is simple and safe to use. Our competitors either only do a few functions or are near impossible for a consumer to use and keep working.
.

04.Do you plan to take on anymore investment in the near future. If so, when, how much, and how will it be used?

Investment acts as an amplifier to performance, if more funds became available we would move faster. At the moment we do not have the management time to raise more funds. If we start to get some market traction I expect we will be approached...
.

05.Are there plans for any physical expansion at DaweVision over the next year or so?

Our experience in growing PIPEX has taught us that you do not need to provide everything yourself. While I expect customer support to be our largest employment area, I hope that we can keep smaller than PIPEX even when we become a world player.
