Helen Sant has been made a partner at KPMG. She is now partner in charge of the tax teams at KPMG’s offices in Ipswich and Cambridge and is one of a growing number of female partners at the firm.
Helen joined KPMG’s offices in Cambridge six years ago and has worked on some of KPMG’s biggest clients from the region including Ipswich Town Football club, Cambridge Building Society, East of England Co-op, Marshalls and Lotus. As part of her road to making partner, Helen was sent on secondment to H M Treasury in 2005 where she worked as a special adviser on tax strategic policy development and was given the opportunity to influence new tax legislation. While at the Treasury, Helen was responsible for the review of administrative procedures for R & D tax relief – a particularly key area for the region’s technology companies where the ability to get a cash refund is critical but delays in handling claims were leading to business failures and loss of jobs. Helen says: “The tax business environment continues to grow ever more complex and the penalties for getting it wrong more severe. “Managing tax risks has become an important goal for all businesses and should be built into board level planning. HMR&C are constantly seeking to close the tax gap (difference between the tax actually collected and the tax they believe is due) and are focusing on transfer pricing, system weaknesses and tax avoidance schemes. By understanding this approach businesses can plan accordingly.” |
