Investor confidence in the Cambridge fabless semiconductor industry's
ability to convert cutting-edge
ideas into successful industry
products has been evidenced
again with an £11.5m Series C
funding round for DisplayLink.
The news of the round, which will be used to accelerate product development and strengthen DisplayLink's position in the emerging network display market, comes less than three weeks after CamSemi reported a £13m Series C round, one of the largest funding rounds for a fabless semiconductor company this year. DisplayLink, whose roots lie in the former AT&T Research lab in Cambridge and the brains of Dr Quentin Stafford-Fraser - credited with pioneering the webcam - and Martin King, father of predictive text messaging, is under going rapid expansion. It has opened a new facility in Taiwan and plans to apply its technology, which enables users to easily connect multiple displays via a USB link, to provide connectivity between mobile phones and monitors, allowing users to surf the web anywhere, with full-screen viewing. The latest funding round was led by new US investor DAG Ven tures, with participation from existing European and US investors - Atlas Venture, Balderton Capital and DFJ Esprit - and brings the total raised by the company to $51m since incorporation in 2003. DisplayLink has its headquarters in Palo Alto, California, and its R & D operation in Cambridge UK, as well as premises in Japan and Taiwan. |
