Page 1 of 2 The ambitious project that promises to bring 8,000 new jobs to
Cambridge, doubling the size of
the Addenbrooke's hospital site
while creating the largest biomedical campus in Europe, took
a major leap forward as the city
council granted outline planning
consent.
There will be few places worldwide to compare with the scope and excellence of the finished Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC), expanding the current site from 70 acres to 140. The campus is already home to one of the world's top two research universities, Europe's largest teaching hospital, the biggest new cancer research initiative in the UK for years and the multi-Nobel prize winning MRC laboratories that helped discover the structure of DNA. Space will be provided for extensive new clinical facilities, including the proposed Children's Hospital and the relocated Papworth Hospital as well as worldclass research labs, a conference centre, hotel, accommodation for staff and transport connections via the guided busway and a new link to the M11. Designed under the plan known as the 2020 Vision - a collaboration between the Campus' three main users, the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUHNHSFT), Cambridge University and the Medical Research Council (MRC) - the aim is to develop the site as an international centre of excellence.
