The three public sector organisations behind a landmark project for Lowestoft have re-affirmed their strong commitment to the Waveney Campus project, following the recent announcement from central government about the future of local council provision.
The Waveney Campus project is a flagship administrative building and state-of-the-art laboratory for 1,000 staff from the three partner organisations. The planned building is being designed to promote productive ways of working in a shared environment, which will enable the partners to deliver efficiency and improvement to their range of services, at lower cost to the public and to businesses. Waveney District Council and Suffolk County Council are to be reviewed by the Boundary Committee, which is examining the long-term options for the shape of local government in Suffolk. The third partner, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas), is unaffected by the potential reorganisation of local government. Brian Robinson, Cefas’ commercial director and the Campus’ senior responsible officer said: “There is a continuing need to provide services efficiently and effectively, regardless of the shape of local government. “All of the partners specified that the Waveney Campus should provide them with flexible accommodation that can adapt to change in a cost-effective, rapid manner – something our existing buildings in Lowestoft cannot deliver. “These principles are at the heart of this partnership project, which remains on target to enable us all to transform our services to meet the delivery challenges that we all face. “Cefas remains committed to the success of the Waveney Campus project.” Councillor Mark Bee, leader of Waveney District Council, expressed his full support for the Waveney Campus project: “I see the role of the Campus, and the modern ways of working that it will support, becoming more relevant as we move the reorganisation debate forward and focus on how best to serve our communities. “The delivery of improved services in an efficient manner is what is important to Waveney citizens, and the Campus project will do just that.” Councillor Jane Storey, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder responsible for property, also gave her backing to the project, adding: “I believe the Campus project will deliver real benefits to the people of North Suffolk and is an important vehicle for delivering shared services and a new way of working. “Suffolk County Council is committed to progressing the Waveney Campus project.” |
