Expansion plans at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire are finally cleared for take off after law firm Mills & Reeve won an important planning battle. Its planning team acted for Sywell Aerodrome Limited in an appeal that the firm says will be welcomed by the aviation industry in general. Over a year after a three-week inquiry had been completed, permission was finally granted by the Secretary of State for the paving of the grass runway at Sywell. The decision comprehensively upheld Sywell’s contention that a grant would not lead to the development of a regional airport and that the mitigation measures would offset the noise and disturbance to residents of the nearby village. Barring further challenge, works on the site could take place as early as next spring. A paved runway will allow more modern, larger and faster aeroplanes into the region and will serve to reduce the demand of light aviation from neighbouring Luton and Stansted. Beverley Firth, the joint head of planning at Mills & Reeve, led the instruction and was assisted by Oliver Bussell and James Ward. |
