Hopes of a return to form may well be founded this week, as all of the UK’s major markets reported positive movement, including Business Weekly’s SHAREtrack index, which corrected a five-week sequence of falls. For the first week in some time, the SHAREtrack, sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, has seen most of its constituent members moving northwards. The Index's ten largest caps led the way, with three of them pitching in with double digit percentage increases in their value. Among them was brewer, Greene King, a performance that preserved its position among the 'Big Ten' - something that has looked under threat of late. Emap's inclusion in the Index could soon be coming to an end. The company lost 13 per cent of its value on news that it had sold its consumer magazine and radio business, a deal which, should it go through, may remove the company’s base from Peterborough and therefore its name from the SHAREtrack 100. Risers this week were led by cleaning services firm Zenith Hygiene, which saw gains of 21 per cent on no news, along with healthcare company, Nestor and data storage specialist, Plasmon, both of which saw a 14 per cent improvement, replacing value lost in recent weeks. Alternative energy specialist, ITM Power also saw gains of 13 per cent this week, helped along by news of a collaborative project with the US Navy. The biggest winner in terms of value was one of 2008's star performers, software provider, Autonomy, which is climbing its way back to the 1000p mark, adding 12 per cent, or 91p during the week. Hardest of this week’s fallers were in-car DVD specialist, Centurion Electronics, which lost 46 per cent of its value after expressing uncertainty over its financial future and International Greetings, which continued to be plagued by last week’s profits warning, losing 62p. |
