![]() Housing and Planning Minister, Yvette Cooper MP The funding will be made available over three years, including £6.1m for 2008/9, and will be concentrated around Ipswich, Colchester and the ports of Felixstowe and Harwich. The Minister made the announcement as part of a £732m fund for Growth Points and Growth Areas across the UK - including the Haven Gateway. The Haven Gateway sub-region was recognised as a New Growth Point in 2006 and in September this year, the Haven Gateway Partnership set out its 2008-11 programme of development. The programme was assessed as the basis of the Government’s potential fund of £17.4m and outlines the major developments across the sub-region. George Courtauld, Haven Gateway Partnership chairman, said: “Funding to develop the infrastructure of the Haven Gateway is absolutely vital and the amount recognises the significance of the Gateway in delivering both economic and housing growth. “This capital and revenue funding will give the Haven Gateway Partnership Board greater flexibility in directing where money is needed most, without repeatedly needing to go back to Government to fund specific infrastructure projects. Levels of growth will continue to be subject to comprehensive testing and public consultation through planning process.” The five Haven ports of Felixstowe, Harwich International, Harwich Navyard, Ipswich and Mistley represent the single most important cluster of ports in the UK. Based on their central role as hubs and generators of economic activity, the Haven Gateway Partnership provides a framework within which its partner organisations – from the private and public sectors – can work together to promote economic opportunities and secure the future prosperity of the region |
