Stansted prices cap
Written by News Desk
Wednesday, 16 January 2008
Major airlines using Stansted Airport have applauded the Government’s decision to maintain price caps at the Essex hub.

easyJet led the salute to Ruth Kelly’s decision, saying it was a “victory for common sense and for consumers.”

The Civil Aviation Authority had recommended to the Department for Transport in July that Stansted should be “de-designated” – i.e. the prices it charges should no longer be capped and BAA should be free to charge whatever it wanted.

Kelly felt that a decision on de-designation should be deferred, at least until further details were know about plans for a second runway at Stansted – a blueprint she has backed.

A BAA statement read: “While BAA maintains its position in favour of de-designating Stansted, we welcome the Secretary of State’s statement that the key issue facing our airports in the South East of England is lack of capacity as well as her renewed support both for a second runway at Stansted, and to consulting on a third runway at Heathrow.

“We also welcome her indication that the issue of de-designation can be reviewed at a future date.”
