 “Many farmers, who endured a difficult 2006 with Bluetongue and foot-and-mouth disease, have had to use their land for other projects to produce additional income,” said Gareth Williams, a member of Hewitsons’ agriculture and rural business team, which has offices in Cambridge, Northampton and Saffron Walden.

“This funding will be vital in propping up the rural economy and help support farmers diversify or improve their businesses.”

Successful projects will be awarded grants ranging from £25,000 to £250,000, which will be administered in the region through thee regional development agencies for the East of England and East Midlands.

Each scheme must demonstrate how it adds value to agricultural, horticultural or forestry products; improves co-operation and collaboration between businesses, and promotes diversification in the rural economy.

Some of the money has been allocated specifically for livestock businesses to focus on projects that improve competitiveness, nutrient management and animal health and welfare. Funding will also be available for skills development in rural businesses, focusing on training in management and business development.
