Bottle maker announces recycling goal

Milk bottle manufacturer Nampak Plastics Europe in Milton Keynes is bidding to make bottles with a 30 per cent recycled content.

Nampak – formed by the merger of UK blow-moulding companies, Plysu and BlowMocan – is one of Europe’s largest manufacturer’s of rigid plastic containers to the food & drink industry and operates from Newport Pagnell.

The £90m turnover company was first to launch the poly-bottle in the UK in 1982 having seen the concept introduced into the American market a few years earlier.

In a parallel strategy, South African company Nampa watched with developments in the UK market and seeing it’s potential, acquired BlowMocan in 1994. Nampak Plastics Europe was formed when Nampak acquired Plysu Plc in 1999.

Now Nampak Plastics has agreed a deal for Irish-owned waste management company Greenstar to provide 6,000 tonnes of recycled plastic each year for its bottle-making process.

Nampak says it wants to use as much recycled content as possible in the two billion bottles it makes each year. It is anticipating opening a plant in 2009 to process 13,000 tonnes of waste bottles back into food-grade HDPE plastic.

As a first phase, bottles made by Nampak, with a 10 per cent recycled content, are set to be available for general sale this summer.
