Dutch potato and potato products firm Lamb Weston/Meijer could create 200 new jobs through expansion in Wisbech.

It is preparing a planning application for a new, nine-storey warehouse next to its current operation at the town’s industrial park. The cool storage facility would cost between £15m and £22m and be built on Fenland District Council land off Algores Road.

Major developments on Cromwell Park and the Nene Waterfront project are already underway and this major industrial scheme completes the jigsaw for the council’s short-term growth strategy.

Lamb Weston is already talking about future expansion after the new factory is built.

The company currently uses more than a million tonnes of potatoes every year and employs more than 1,200 people worldwide.

Fruit juice maker Del Monte is also looking to ramp up its operations in Wisbech after deciding to close its King’s Lynn facility due to market pressures.

Some of the 80 Lynn staff could move to Wisbech while the fate of the King’s Lynn site – Del Monte’s home for a quarter of a century – remains undecided.

Horticultural nursery business R.Delamore Ltd has meanwhile expanded to a new, 19-acre site at Wisbech St Mary, where it employs 100 full-time staff. That figure doubles in season.

The multi-million pound new site is literally the hothouse for the UK’s leading grower of young plants including fuchsias, geraniums and lavenders.

Each year the nursery grows around 100 million plants, which are supplied to thousands of nursery and garden centres through the UK and Ireland.
