Hi-tech development and manufacturing company Irisys (InfraRed Integrated Systems Ltd) has invested in Northampton by opening a major factory in the town, creating more jobs.

The company, which manufactures intelligent infrared people counters and thermal imaging systems, has moved its production facility to Mansard Close on the Westgate Industrial Estate.

The company has also opened a new  HQ at Swan Valley, Northampton. Its clients include supermarket giant Tesco which  uses its infrared customer counting sensors to reduce waiting times at the checkouts.

Managing director David Clayson said: “This is an extremely exciting time for us as we enter a  period of major growth in our business.

“Our relocation to new premises will enable us to increase our output capacity  from 37,000 units a year to 250,000. Our aim is to double our turnover year-on-year for the foreseeable future.”

The company currently employs 84 staff and is expecting to take on new workers as production increases.

Irisys previously operated from an historic old mill in Towcester, which it had outgrown, but the new premises in Mansard Close provides a huge amount of extra space with a 5,500 sq ft manufacturing area and 10,000 sq ft of office space.

Irisys’ people counters log the movement of millions of people through shopping malls, stores and leisure venues every year, while the Irisys’ queue management solution is becoming the preferred choice in many of the world’s busiest and most profitable supermarkets.

Infrared sensors at entrances and above the checkout lanes accurately detect the number of customers and automatically calculate the average queue length, average wait time and overall store checkout performance, ensuring the minimum wait times for customers.

Irisys’ technology is now being utilised to detect unauthorised access at secure entrances, counting the number of people leaving buildings in the event of an evacuation and monitoring building utilisation for facilities management.
