A dearth of smart, hi-tech research units in Cambridge has triggered a potential boom for Fenland – and economic development chiefs have responded with a multi-million pound investment to meet demand.
Business development specialist Clive Gibbon picked up on a surge of inquiries from frustrated companies and Fenland District Council has backed the vision with an exciting plan to build more than 20 highly specced R & D units next to the successful South Fens Business Centre in Chatteris. They will range between around 110 and 150 sq m, all with mezzanine floors and excellent facilities and could be ready by mid-2009. Gibbon, who has put Fenland firmly on the map, says he is already fielding inquiries from across the UK. “Judging by the calls we are receiving there is clearly much pent up demand so this investment strategy is well timed,” he said. Fenland is ramping up the offering by rolling out industrial units that will enable research companies that settle in the district to move their concepts into development pods. Gibbon said: “We felt a turnkey offering would be attractive to dynamic research-based companies that want to take their ideas through the complete production cycle. “We have set ourselves up to accommodate young and ambitious companies such as University spin-outs from Cambridge and other areas where supply simply isn’t keeping pace with demand. “As developers think twice about whether to build speculatively, we are investing in a range of facilities that companies tell us they require.” Fenland’s corporate property portfolio will soon include 38 spanking new managed offices at another local development, The Boathouse Business Centre, due to open this August in Wisbech. The Boathouse is an ergonimically designed, sustainable building sited within the riverside quarter designed to exceed modern business demands while creating an ideal location for local, national and international businesses. Overlooking the marina, this award winning development also incorporates a modern style cafe which opens onto a landscaped plaza square providing an ideal meeting point for clients and staff. Wisbech has become a thriving business centre with good transport links and The Boathouse offers high quality flexible unfurnished office accommodation ranging from 215 sq ft to 753 sq ft. The centre offers the latest in telecoms and data technology together with a full range of onsite business services, easy in and out lease arrangements, state of the art conference facilities and meeting rooms and onsite secure parking. • For more details, contact Clive Gibbon on 01945 427112 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
