Birketts set to open base in Cambridge

Leading East Anglian law firm Birketts LLP is opening an office in Cambridge to add to its operations in Norwich and Ipswich. Business Weekly understands that Birketts will be building a specialist property team from Cambridge but that the new office will be headed up by an experienced corporate law partner. Adrian Possener’s name is being mentioned in connection with the role.  Possener joined Birketts LLP in 2006 after being with corporate boutique Chambers & Co for two years. Prior to this he was with Eversheds for 10 years and Freshfields for seven. Principally a corporate finance lawyer, he has been involved in a number of IPOs and other securities issues for fully listed and AIM companies. He advises on both public and private takeovers, JVs, corporate reorganisations and buy-outs. He also acts on VC and business angel finance transactions. He is recognised for his pragmatic approach and broad experience in structuring commercial arrangements. The Cambridge move is further evidence of Birketts’ growing influence in the region and of the buoyancy of the property scene in the East of England. Birketts is expected to make a formal announcement in the near future. The firm was named among the Legal 500 guide’s coveted elite of Regional Heavyweights last September and has seen impressive increases in turnover since Alistair Lang was persuaded to leave a High Street bank to become CEO in 2001. Birketts announced in Business Weekly’s ‘Law Lords’ guide in the autumn that it had a five-year goal to double fee income and strengthen its position in the region. Its decision to establish a Cambridge office is another boost for companies locally. Leading City law firm Charles Russell is already ramping up its presence from new premises in Cambridge and City heavyweights are eyeing potential opportunities in the region – almost certainly via acquisition.
