Abcam's CEO, Jonathan Milner
Internet antibody retailer, Abcam has reported a 19 per cent increase in pre-tax profits for the first half of the year, with sales up by a third.

The Cambridge-based firm said that sales for the six months to December had grown by 38 per cent to £15.3m, beating gains it saw this time last year by five per cent, after it increased its product range by 44 per cent.

Abcam, which now markets 40,800 antibodies and counting via its own online catalogue, said that it had proposed a 30 per cent increase in its interim dividend for shareholders, taking the payment up to 1.04p per share.

"This has been an important half year for Abcam." said CEO,Jonathan Milner. "At this time last year we reported sales growth of 33.7 per cent, achieving 38.3 per cent growth this half year clearly demonstrates the  potential of the business and how we are continuing our commitment to profitable  growth and the delivery of healthy returns for our shareholders."

He said that demand for research antibodies continues to grow in all of the company's markets as does market penetration, adding that Abcam has been able to grow its catalogue significantly through increasing in-house production capacity and partnerships with trusted suppliers.

The company also said that investment in its high throughput production facility and £0.25m of costs associated with the bid made for the firm in the late summer of last year restricted the increase in profit before tax to £2.7m.

It said that gross margins for the period had fallen to 58.8 per cent from 59.4 per cent a year ago, and that it has slowed its planned acceleration of monoclonal antibodies output in order to ensure its ability to hit target production efficiencies.

Shares in the firm, which are hovering around their peak value of 372p, have dropped almost five per cent, falling 18p to 345p.

  • Of Budgets and White Papers

The 2008 UK Budget may have been a modest affair, but published with it were two documents with probably greater implications for the long-term performance of the innovation sector in the UK.

Many of you reading through the coverage of Alistair Darling’s first Budget, delivered on 12th March 2008, may have been reminded of Claud Cockburn’s famous (spoof?) entry for the prize of most dull but accurate headline: ‘Small Earthquake in Chile, Not Many Dead’.
