AA’s Graham Bell drew the winner and presented the prize to Colin Smithers, chief executive of Plextek, a Cambridge consultancy providing custom electronics design and consultancy services. Smithers said: “It was a fantastic gesture by American and for a really worthy cause.” Wallace Cancer Care is an independent charity providing complementary cancer care at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. The charity has received over 10,000 visits from patients and carers since the opening of its drop-in centre in May 2004. Wallace Cancer Care now provides, free of charge, a drop-in centre at Addenbrooke’s, staffed by a senior oncology nurse and trained volunteers providing information, support and direction. At nearby premises individual and group support, counselling, complementary therapies such as yoga, massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and reiki, talks and programmes to induce relaxation, relieve stress and alleviate specific side effects of treatment are available for both patients and primary carers. Information, support, companionship and help are provided at the most difficult times for cancer patients; at diagnosis, during treatment, and when treatment ceases. In-patients are also served through the daily cocktail round on the ward before lunch, the Art and Wellbeing project offered in conjunction with the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettles Yard, and complementary therapies delivered on the wards. Both centres offer a peaceful, calm environment where emotional, psychological and physical needs are all recognised, and where patients can learn techniques such as relaxation, visualisation and simple massage to support them throughout their treatment and beyond. By treating the whole person, Wallace Cancer Care offers a complementary approach to conventional medical treatment with the aim of improving overall quality of life. American Airlines launched a daily service between Stansted and JFK last October and said the service was thriving – so much so it is starting a second round trip from August 1. Work will start soon on an American Airlines Business Lounge at Stansted, which is due for completion this summer. As well as appealing to the region’s business passengers, American is the only scheduled airline offering economy class seats on the Stansted-New York route. American’s Business Class features innovative, fully motorised lie-flat seats in a 2-2-2 configuration, a personal in-flight entertainment device with audio and video on demand, state-of-the-art cabin lighting and sleek, ergonomically designed overhead bins. |
