Amino opens first Far East office in Shanghai

Amino Communications has opened its first Far East office in anticipation of the rapidly growing opportunities presented by the region’s strongly emerging Internet TV (IPTV) market.

The Cambridge-based Set-Top Box (STB) supplier will use the office in Shanghai, China, as a key regional hub for its operations group, which provides local support for its manufacturing partners, allowing it to develop new and existing partnerships.

According to Amino, 2007 was the year Asia emerged as the market leader in terms of sales of IPTV technology, a position that should be consolidated with the boost of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which research group, In-Stat, says will generate 4.5 million subscribers and £110m in STB revenue.

“The IPTV industry in China is growing at a rate of 34.5 per cent every quarter,” said Alan Masterman, VP Operations at Amino. “2008 is set to witness an even faster growth rate with events such as the Beijing Olympics increasing interest in high quality, high-speed multimedia.

“With the opening of the Shanghai office, we have created a focal point of our operations in this market which will provide a sustained, high-quality service throughout China.”

Amino has been operating in China since 2003, starting with Chengdu USEE, a broadband multimedia company based in the Chengdu region of China. It has since manufactured 1.7 million IPTV STBs.

Amino believes the opening of this office will enable this partnership, as well as its relationships with In-Tech Electronics and Wistron NeWeb Corporation, to develop further.

Amino and USEE co-develop products incorporating Amino’s IntAct software stack in order to provide applications such as AVS (advanced audio and video standard) codec technology, video telephony, VoIP and gaming to name just a few.

  • Of Budgets and White Papers

The 2008 UK Budget may have been a modest affair, but published with it were two documents with probably greater implications for the long-term performance of the innovation sector in the UK.

Many of you reading through the coverage of Alistair Darling’s first Budget, delivered on 12th March 2008, may have been reminded of Claud Cockburn’s famous (spoof?) entry for the prize of most dull but accurate headline: ‘Small Earthquake in Chile, Not Many Dead’.
