Wheels of industry: Executives get to grips with a fresh role at the launch of the Cranfield-Williams management development initiative
Cranfield University is at the centre of a new corporate partnership with Formula One racing giant, Williams F1, intended to help develop the skills of UK executives.

The partnership intends to bring together Cranfield’s expertise in executive management development and Williams’ experience of sustained cutting edge performance in the highly competitive Formula One environment to offer organisations seeking innovative development for their executives access to a range of customised workshops.

“We’ve long known that the ways in which we manufacture and market our primary product – Formula One racing cars – incorporates processes that have applicability to other businesses,” said Frank Williams, managing director of Williams F1, one of the world’s leading Formula One teams, with 16 FIA Formula One World Championship titles and 113 Grand Prix victories to its credit.

“Through this partnership with Cranfield School of Management we hope to formalise and commercialise our knowledge and add genuine value to the companies and organisations that participate in the Cranfield programme.”
Williams F1 will work with the Centre for Customised Executive Development at Cranfield School of Management.

Mark Jenkins, Professor of Business Strategy at Cranfield School of Management and co-author of Performance at the Limit – Business Lessons from Formula 1 Motor Racing, said:  “Formula One provides a powerful example where performance is achieved by unique combinations of people, finance and technologies.

“It encapsulates many of the challenges faced by today’s organisations and their executives: challenges such as delivering high performance through teamwork, accelerating speed to market, sustaining competitive advantage and enhancing innovation and creativity.”
