Acambis extends its £20m JE vaccine deal

Japanese Encephalitis is transmitted by the Culex genus of mosquitoes which thrive in the rice fields of Asia.
World-leading vaccine maker, Acambis has announced an extension to last year's £20m licensing deal for its Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, ChimeriVax-JE with the vaccines division of the global pharma giant, sanofi-aventis.

The Cambridge-based company said that as a result of the extension, which sees the license grow to include India and the Indian subcontinent, Acambis will receive an upfront payment from sanofi pasteur, a milestone payment on licensure of the vaccine in India and royalties on sales in these territories.

"This extended agreement will enable both Acambis and sanofi pasteur to benefit from a more co-ordinated approach in the JE endemic region," said Acambis' CEO, Ian Garland.

"ChimeriVax-JE is an important vaccine for a devastating disease and we are keen to progress towards licensure as quickly as possible."

In February last year, Acambis announced that it had granted sanofi pasteur marketing, distribution and certain manufacturing rights to Acambis' single-dose ChimeriVax-JE vaccine against Japanese encephalitis, which excluded the US, India and the Indian subcontinent.

The UK firm had an existing agreement with Bharat Biotech for India and the subcontinent, which Acambis and Bharat Biotech have mutually agreed to terminate, and the rights to these territories have now been granted to sanofi pasteur.

Acambis said that Bharat Biotech has made a significant contribution towards the development of ChimeriVax-JE and has agreed to compensate the Indian biotech firm, with the net financial effect positive for Acambis.

As with the existing agreement, Acambis said that it will supply the vaccine in bulk to sanofi pasteur from its Canton, MA facility.

According to the World Health Organization, 30,000 to 50,000 people suffer from JE annually, mainly in Asia. During a recent epidemic in northern India and Nepal, JE killed more than 1,000 people, most of them children.

  • Of Budgets and White Papers

The 2008 UK Budget may have been a modest affair, but published with it were two documents with probably greater implications for the long-term performance of the innovation sector in the UK.

Many of you reading through the coverage of Alistair Darling’s first Budget, delivered on 12th March 2008, may have been reminded of Claud Cockburn’s famous (spoof?) entry for the prize of most dull but accurate headline: ‘Small Earthquake in Chile, Not Many Dead’.
