Top brains in Cambridge and California have joined forces in a bid to
create a true stem cell bank that could offer on-demand delivery of
stem cells matched to a patient's own immune system.
California-based International Stem Cell Corporation (ISCO) is collaborating with the University of Cambridge to accelerate advances in regenerative medicine and also to commercialise cell transplant therapies. Both Roger Pedersen, Professor of Regenerative Medicine at Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, and ISCO president Jeffrey Janus believe the alliance is significant. ISCO is the first company in the world to perfect a process for creating human stem cells from unfertilized eggs. These "parthenogenetic" stem cells can be matched to the immune systems of millions of people.
