![]() Prof Jaideep Prabhu, the first Jawaharlal Nehru Professor of Indian Business and Enterprise Currently director of research and professor of marketing at Tanaka Business School, Imperial College London, Professor Prabhu will assume his new role from September 1. The professorship, funded by a £3.2 million grant from the Government of India, is to be based at the Cambridge Centre for Indian Business – established with financial support from the BP Foundation at the University’s Judge Business school. The establishment of the professorship was first announced in New Delhi in January by Cambridge Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alison Richard. A major objective of the professorship is to help forge closer links between India and other economies globally and to promote a deeper understanding of India’s interests and place in the world economy. Professor Prabhu said: “India now plays a pivotal role in the global economy. With 8-9 per cent annual growth, rising foreign exchange reserves, a booming capital market and rapidly expanding FDI inflows, India is the second fastest growing major economy in the world. “Indeed, by some accounts, India is now the world’s fifth largest economy and is likely to be among the top three by 2050. This resurgence, while catalysed by changes in national policy, has largely been driven by the impressive progress of Indian business and enterprise. “The professorship and accompanying centre will research the factors behind the impressive progress of Indian business and the long term trajectory of Indian enterprise. “Specifically, we will focus on research related to technological innovation, the globalisation of firms from emerging economies, and the relationship between the knowledge economy, entrepreneurship and economic development. “Our research on innovation will have implications for sectors such as agriculture, retail, healthcare, energy, education and infrastructure, and studying the role of Indian businesses in the global economy will provide insights into new models of business being generated in India that are making its economy truly global. “The centre will also provide a wider base for the dissemination of research findings and for engagement between academics, businesses, policymakers and communities in India, the UK and elsewhere.” Arnoud De Meyer, director of Judge Business School, added: “Indian companies have become a significant influence in the global business world and we need to understand more about how these new players will interact with the established multinationals and what kind of innovations they will bring. “The appointment is a very important step for the Judge Business School to develop our capacity to study the evolving role of Indian companies and to enrich the content of our programmes with these new insights. “Professor Prabhu is an excellent choice to provide leadership and coordinate the efforts of our colleagues in their research on Indian business and we all look forward to working closely with him.”
