The business and assets of Splashpower Ltd, the Cambridge wireless
power innovator which went into administration six weeks ago, have been
acquired by Alticor subsidiary, US-based Fulton Innovation.
Terms of the deal, which Fulton says reinforces its position in the rapidly growing wireless power industry, were not disclosed.
Splashpower has struggled to get its SplashPad technology to market since launching in 2001. The company in the past said the device, which transfers power to small mobile devices without the use of wires, had not been focused or cheap enough and though the firm underwent restructuring last year and planned a launch for Christmas 2008, money finally ran out in March.
Problems also arose as Splashpower initially chased a universal charger, which would have meant all the mobile device manufacturers it was targeting would need to carry its SplashModule, a highly ambitious target for the new technology.
Fulton, the exclusive licensor of Alticor’s intelligent wireless power technology eCoupled, which is also at the demo stage, says the acquisition expands both the breadth and depth of a substantial patent portfolio, comprised of over 250 patents granted or pending worldwide.
“Today’s acquisition reaffirms Fulton’s commitment to the continued development and commercialisation of wireless power,” said Dave Baarman, director of advanced technologies for Fulton Innovation.
“By combining our own robust patent portfolio with Splashpower’s, we continue to strengthen and expand our capabilities in the development of wireless power as well as our global presence. We are extremely fortunate to have the backing and support of our parent company, Alticor.”
The assets of Splashpower were acquired out of the Administration process. Graham Bushby and Lynn Bailey of accountant Baker Tilly were appointed Joint Administrators for Splashpower on March 26, 2008.
Alticor employs more than 13,000 people worldwide, including over 450 engineers and scientists. It has sales of more than $7 billion annually and is headquartered in Ada, Michigan, with further operations in over 80 countries and territories.
