Cambridge CleanTech companies are being handed the chance to tap into lucrative markets in China through a trade mission to Hong Kong in the spring.
Full details of the mission will be revealed at an upcoming summit in Cambridge UK where Nicholas Brooke, chairman of the Hong Kong, Science and Technology Parks – former sponsor of Business Weekly’s Awards – will address the new Cambridge Cleantech membership network about opportunities in HK and China. The Cambridge event is being held on Thursday March 1 (6pm-8pm) at Deloitte’s Hills Road HQ.
Brooke said “The determination of the Chinese Government, as demonstrated by the country’s 12th Five Year Plan, to address the challenges of the environment and sustainability and in particular to achieve the situation where 15 per cent of their power generation is derived through renewable sources by 2020, affords significant business opportunities for companies in the clean tech field.
“Hong Kong and the Science Park are ideally placed not only to provide the platform for companies to access such opportunities but also to facilitate the identification of suitable partners and business prospects as well as to provide input on how best to enter the market.
“In addition, Hong Kong itself with seven million people, large infrastructure projects and important priorities with regard to energy efficiency, waste handling etc, offers great business potential for UK companies.
“I look forward to the opportunity to inform more companies about all this on the evening of March 1, as we are seeking to further develop and strengthen our relationship with the important Cambridge region.”
Hugh Parnell, chairman of Cambridge Cleantech added: “We have had contact from a number of cleantech businesses from the developing economies and with European markets currently faltering, there is a tremendous opportunity for business growth in countries such as China.
“As one of the fastest growing markets globally, China needs a range of technology driven products and services to both power its growth and to ensure that this growth is more environmentally sustainable.”
