May Day, May Day - The Future Role Of Radio And Radar In Specialist Service Provision (9:15AM - 6:30PM)
The
‘May Day, May Day’ event organised by Cambridge Wireless analyses the
past, present and future of specialist wide area radio technology,
drawing on local case studies of wireless innovation to illustrate how
industry and government organisations can adapt to meet future needs in
local or national emergencies.
Start date/time
: 09.15am. Thursday 1st May 2008
End date/time
: 18.30pm. Thursday 1st May 2008
Venue
: The Imperial War Museum, Duxford.
In the 1930’s Pye Telecom were developers and
manufacturers of radio and TV receivers. Volume production expertise,
short wave/VHF radio design skills, and new valve technologies enabled
the company to act quickly to supply wireless solutions during the
Second World War.
The relevance of this to today is that we need to
nurture both production, and radio system design skills to be able to
respond to the wireless requirements of local and national emergencies.
In part, this emulates the American model in which the government is
mandating that radio design and production capabilities, together with
specifically allocated radio spectrum should be made available for
‘Public Protection’ and ‘Disaster Relief and Recovery’ in the UHF band,
L Band and S Band.
History indicates that home grown skills and
capabilities are often crucial in defending national and international
interests. Enlightened spectral management and standards policy is an
additional essential precondition.
This ‘May Day’ event is partly sponsored by Iridium, Sagentia, Cambridge Consultants and Plextek and brings together industry representatives from the two way radio, cellular, broadcasting and satellite sectors to:
-
Provide
a strategic overview of future radio requirements for public protection
and disaster relief, locally, nationally and internationally; and to
highlight the major business opportunities that are implicit in this
process.
-
Illustrate
the continuing need for a close coupling between civilian and
commercial radio, and between military and specialist radio design and
production including the exploitation of crossover opportunities
between radio and radar design.
-
Suggest
future potential opportunities for leveraging cellular design, and
production scale economies in specialist, emergency, and business radio
applications.
-
Explore
the future role of cellular operators, the broadcast community,
satellite industry and two way and business radio community in
specialist and emergency service provision.
Additionally
we highlight the commonalities between radio transceiver and radar
design and look at emerging radar based security applications and their
potential integration with specialist radio system solutions.
We hope that you will be able to join us for an engaging and stimulating day of discussion, demonstrations and debateat The Imperial War Museum. The day includes a tour of the museum and an opportunity to see and hear the famous Grace Spitfire in action in an aerobatic display. The day ends with a Networking Session.

Short Range Wireless SIG - Wireless Automation (9:30AM - 6:00PM)
This event deals with wireless automation.
Unwiring the links to switches, sensors, meters, appliances and
machines: in the home, enterprise and industry.
Start date/time: 09.30hrs Thursday 8th May 2008
End date/time: 18.00hrs Thursday 8th May 2008
Venue: Buckingham House, New Hall, Cambridge.
The Short Range Wireless SIG is championed by: Antony Rix from TTP, Paul Maurice of Artimi and Peter George of Anritsu MMDE.
This event is sponsored by Rohde & Schwarz.
Wireless links are beginning to enter the mainstream for applications such as heating control and smart metering. This
is helped by dramatic reductions in cost and power consumption, that
enable radio transceivers to have a battery life of weeks or years, or
even run from harvested energy. However, the market is still at an early stage. This
full-day event will bring technologists, designers, business executives
and analysts together, to provide insight into which applications will
provide greatest value and what barriers must be overcome to further
develop the market.
While
the day will focus on applications, rather than the wireless technology
itself, the technologies that enable these applications include:
Bluetooth, Zigbee, WiFi, SP100 and a host of ISM band proprietary
solutions and potentially also wide area technologies such as GSM/GPRS.
We
are looking for speakers; either with a need that is not currently
being met or studies of the successful application of wireless
technology, to talk about the following application areas:
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
- Sensors in building fabric, temperature, humidity etc
- Wireless switches, wireless control of electrical appliances such as lights, freezers etc
- Plant/machine control/monitoring
- Security, alarms, monitoring, access control
- Energy saving
- Smart metering
Proposals in related areas are welcome. To discuss your idea, please email: admin@cambridgewireless.co.uk
We hope that you will be able to join us for an engaging session of discussion, networking and debate. Click here to view the draft agenda
