Cambridge Network Open Meeting: 'Communicating With Software' (5:30PM - 8:30PM)
All members are welcome to attend this Open Meeting, which will provide you with an opportunity to pick up the latest thinking on how people and machines will be communicating in the future!

Hosted by Microsoft Research, and with presentations from Red Gate Software, Microsoft Research, Kodak and the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, the Cambridge Network is delighted to stimulate debate on this controversial subject, which is key to the success of many of our member organisations.

If you believe that:
• most software is pretty difficult and non-intuitive to communicate with when you come across it for the first time
• if people do not enjoy/benefit from the first experience with a tool they seldom come back
• if people do enjoy/benefit from the first experience, they quickly tell their friends, and a social 'snowball' can ensue
• really simple things like size/positioning of buttons can make a big difference
• there are a host of new business opportunities out there constrained not by the logic of the process, but by the human interface
• Cambridge invents new science/technology very well - but is not good at getting real people to use it, …
you, too, will want to hear the response from organisations such as these that are investing hugely in new man-machine interfaces for software!

The Q&A session following the presentations will provide the opportunity for everyone to question the panel (Stephen Chambers from Red Gate Software, John Piper from Kodak, Natasa Milic-Frayling from Microsoft Research, and Alan Blackwell from Cambridge University's Computer Laboratory, chaired by Cambridge Network's Peter Hewkin).

Please do come and join the debate, which will, no doubt, spill over into further discussion and networking over a drinks buffet kindly provided by Microsoft Research and Red Gate Software. This will be a fascinating look into a subject important to everybody today, and we do hope that you can join us at the meeting.

Participation is free to individual and corporate members of the Cambridge Network, and anybody at the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. Non-members can attend at a fee of £40+VAT, payable before the event.

To register to attend, please follow this link: www.cambridgenetwork.co.uk/events/article/default.aspx?objid=50783. (nb. if you experience any problems with this registration link, could you please email vicky.faupel@cambridgenetwork.co.uk direct)

Pioneering Nanotechnology! (6:00PM)
Part of La Playa’s Golden Egg Business Innovation Seminars, Pioneering Nanotechnology is the latest seminar hosted by the specialist Science & Technology insurance broker.

Far from being a remote or ephemeral science, nanotechnology and the materials that it has spawned are fast becoming ubiquitous – now in everyday use in consumer products from cleaning fluids to MP3 players.

Nanotechnology now features regularly in mainstream news services, and public awareness about the potential benefits is growing – as is concern about the possible impact on health and environmental safety.

La Playa has brought together an impressive panel of speakers to examine some of the practical issues involved with nanotechnology, including:

• Bringing nanotechnology to life – from concept to successful commercial operation.
• Identifying the need for standards in nanotechnology to ensure safety in its development and use.
• Examining the developments in nanotechnology in the Far East.

The event will be held in Cambridge on 23 October
