Welding pioneer expands into Malaysia

Officials representing the parties sign the MoU

Cambridge welding technologies pioneer, TWI, is spreading its expertise into industry in Malaysia.

With the support of the Malaysian government, an historic agreement was signed between MARA – a leading Malaysian skills establishment – and TWI.

UK-based TWI runs a world class centre of expertise in manufacturing, engineering material and joining through its subsidiary TWISEA in South East Asia.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two organisations which will see the establishment of a Regional Innovation Centre for Joining and Structural Integrity at Universiti Kuala Lumpur.

The centre will act as the hub for delivery of support services to industry across Malaysia through applied research and development and the transfer of best international practice in manufacturing technologies.

Dato' Seri Haji Mohd Shafie bin Haji Apdal, the Minister of Rural and Regional Development expressed his enthusiasm for the project to which he has given his backing. He said that it would be a force of good for the future.

The Minister was given a tour of the TWI facility during his visit and saw for himself the range of training and technologies which are undertaken at the Great Abington, Cambridgeshire site.
