Kunshan is a modern city situated 50 kilometers to the west of Shanghai half way between Shanghai and the ancient city of Suzhou with is many historic buildings and other cultural attractions.
The city occupies an area of 920 km² and accommodates a population of some 1,200,000 people. It enjoys the advantages of being relatively close to the amenities and transport links of Shanghai, but far enough to enjoy competitive operating and labour costs.
All Apple’s iPod Touches are manufactured and delivered from Kunshan before being delivered to Apple's main base in San Jose. Avery Dennison, who make specialty tapes and engineering films manufacture in Kunshan. Toshiba, Dell, Fujitsu, and Hewlett-Packard outsource the manufacture of their laptops at Compal factory in Kunshan.
There is a ready supply of skilled labour in the area supplied by four vocational and technical colleges and three vocational secondary schools in the city.
Additionally Kunshan New and High-tech Human Resources Market has recruiting arrangements established with over 100 domestic universities and colleges providing access to a wide range of qualified technical and professional personnel.
It holds large scale job fair each quarter attended by over 50,000 people making it one of the biggest in the region and its website www.kshr.com.cn receives more than six million hits per year, making it one of the most popular professional websites in east China.
Kunshan New & Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone (KSND)
KSND has attracted a wide range of world-class hi-tech companies, especially from Taiwan, and strives to offer a modern world class base for hi-tech industries embracing the principles of sustainable and eco-friendly development.
Established in 1994, it has so far attracted more than 600 foreign investment projects representing a total authorized investment of US$ 8 billion with utilized capital exceeding US$ 4 billion. The zone is split into three areas which make up a total land area of 52 Km2.
Section A is located to the north of the city and accommodates the Kunshan Mould Industry Base and Kunshan Science & Technology Innovation Centre focusing on R & D, trade and professional services.
Section B is located to the south of the city and focuses on six hi-tech industries, including IT (eg automotive electronics, robotics), New Energy (eg solar, wind), Advanced Materials (nano-technologies, specialized steels), Optoelectronics (eg organic LED manufacture), Precision Machinery (eg mould manufacturing) and Medical Products (eg biotechnology, siRNA manufacturing and pharmaceuticals).
Section C focuses on small-and-medium-sized hi-tech enterprises providing them with competitive investment environment.
Currently there are more than 200 mould manufacturing enterprises including amongst others; Foxconn, Wah Fu Electronics, and Makino. Total sales in this sector exceed RMB 10 billion representing over 10 per cent of China’s mould production.
KSND encourages investments in wind energy, solar thermal conversion and geothermal generation. The zone incorporates a number of initiatives including the Renewable Energy Theme Park, the Renewable Energy Science and Education Demonstration Center, the Photovoltaic Industry Finance Platform, the Photovoltaic Industry Education and Training Center for Solar Energy, the Solar Energy Raw Material Trading Center, the Solar Energy Equipment Manufacturing Center, the Photovoltaic Modules Manufacturing Center, Customer Service Center for Photovoltaic Products, a State-level Laboratory and a State-level Pilot base. Currently there are over 20 solar energy and wind energy enterprises, including Motech Suzhou, GSM Solar and the New Energy Technology Corporation.
This includes investments in the development of intelligent robots for medical and industrial applications (eg welding) and semiconductor investments such as Anadigics state-of-the art 6" gallium arsenide wafer fabrication facility..
Kunshan is currently the only siRNA Manufacturing Base in China. The Chinese government has recently announced the establishment of the country's biggest siRNA R&D complex in KSND, which will house both basic research and commercial startup companies. A siRNA technology research institute has already been established developing siRNA liquid phase synthesis and a variety of anti-HBV siRNA pharmacy projects. It aims to develop a comprehensive technical capability including experimental center, business incubator, animal laboratory center, environmental protection systems and safe manufacturing systems.
Transportation & Logistics
KSND has good road links providing convenient access to Shanghai’s international transportation hubs. It is about 45 minutes’ drive from the domestic airport at Hongqiao and 80 minutes from Pudong International Airport. Waigaoqiao Port is only 60 minutes away and it takes only 90 minutes to get to the new Wusongjiang deep water port. The zone also allows convenient access to the extensive canal network which allow bulk cargos to reach Wusong Port and the Huangpu river which leads into the Yangtze River.
Three major highways pass through the KSND: The Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, State Highway 312 and the Suzhou-Hongqiao Airport Highway. There are also extensive railway links including the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway, the Beijing-Shanghai Express Railway and the Shanghai-Kunshan Express Light Railway. Kunshan will also be a stop on the route of the new Beijing-Shanghai Express Railway, currently at the planning stage, which once built will make it possible to get to Shanghai in only 15 minutes.
KSND has its own customs house with a green lane connecting to Shanghai’s ports-of-entry in order to improve the speed and efficiency of customs clearance. This allows fast and efficient customs clearance for air cargo in as little as 2 hours for imports and 4 hours for exports and for sea cargos 36 hours for import and 24 hours for exports.
